Thesis Theme Review: Best Theme For WordPress?

by Jeff on October 1, 2010

Thesis Theme ReviewThesis Theme is a wordpress theme that is designed with the internet marketer in mind.  You may not know this, but this very site runs on the Thesis Theme – along with all of my other WordPress sites.

If you’re new to internet marketing or blogging in general, it’s important that your website has a theme that is easy for your visitors to navigate and access your information.  We call this a “good user experience” and having a clean theme is very important to achieve this.

As a dedicated user of Thesis Theme, I will tell you why I like this theme and how it benefits internet marketers.

As a user of WordPress, you’re probably aware of the thousands of free themes that you can access from the dashboard when you log into your website.

While some of these themes are decent, I’ve yet to truly find a great all-around theme that can work in every type of niche.  I used to work with the iNove theme back in the day, but I found it only worked decently with a few niches.

I decided to purchase the Thesis Theme when I saw a successful site ranking well in Google for a random niche.  I think it was in the weight loss market, but I’m not sure.

All I know is that I loved the look and feel of his website and how easy it was to navigate.  I found out that he was using Thesis which greatly influenced by buying decision.

In my opinion, having a clean and easy to read website is key to making money online.  Thesis Theme makes this easy with the right settings…

Thesis Theme: What Makes It Great?

Let’s take a good look at the first options of the theme.  As you can see, there are plenty of options for you to customize to your liking.  In fact, Thesis Theme is so customizable, you can create all of your own custom images, buttons, borders, etc. (or have them outsourced) and add them to your site.  You’ll have to mess around with the code, but again you can outsource all of that.

Thesis Theme OptionsThe above picture shows you the Thesis Options page.  This is where you can edit certain things like the title of your website, whether or not you’d like to index your categories, tags, archives, and more.  You can also choose the number of posts that appear on the front page of your blog.

Thesis Bylines OptionsIn the Display Options section, you can choose whether or not to show your head and tagline.  This is important to disable if you plan on using a banner for your header.

The only other section I touch in here are the Bylines.  For some sites, I choose to not show the date that my post was published.  I do this for a lot of my set it and forget it sites so that my visitors don’t know how old my reviews are :)

The Navigation Menu is very useful.  You can add and remove as many pages as you’d like from the navigation bar on your blog, along with the order that they appear in.  You can also add more links if you want to link out to another webpage or review.

The header and footer scripts section allows you to add certain scripts like opt-in pop-ups or analytics to your site.  These are useful for tracking the number of visitors that you have and which keywords are being used to find your website.

Thesis Theme Design Options

This is the next set of options for you to edit your Thesis Theme.  Here you can change the colors of texts, the sizes of the fonts, the width of the blog and sidebar, and more.  Take a look at the image below so you can see what I’m talking about…

Thesis Design OptionsThe Fonts, Colors, and More! section is where you really start to edit how you blog looks and feels.  The Body section allows you to choose the main font for your theme.  I usually use Verdana for my sites, but occasionally I’ll use Georgia.  Either one looks great.

You’ll also be able to edit the color of your headline and tagline along with the colors of your titles for your blog posts.  You can edit the colors of your navigation bar in the Nav Menu section.  I haven’t done much editing with colors on this site, but you can definitely theme your colors if you want to.

The Site Layout section is where you can choose how you want your blog to appear.  Do you want a 1 column only blog which can act as a sales page?  Or do you want a 2 column blog like this one?  Or, if you’d like, you can have 3 columns – 2 sidebars and a central content area.

Thesis Custom EditorYou can also use the custom file editor to further edit the CSS of the theme.  But instead of editing the actual CSS file, you simply input the code that you want to use and it will replace the one in the main CSS.  That’s how I was able to create the blue background you see.

Conclusion

Well, that really is about it.  I don’t know what else I can talk about with the theme other than the fact that you make it what you want it to be.  You have all of these options available to make your blog look how you want it.

Now if you’re new to CSS and html, then use Google to search for tutorials.  For instance, if you want a custom header like I have on this site, then you’ll want to learn the code to make that possible.  It’s not difficult, just takes a little bit of learning.

After working with Thesis Theme for some time, you’ll get used to it and you’ll learn some CSS and html along the way which is never a bad thing.

I am thinking of designing a website for a small business with no blog in mind, just for promotional purposes. Do you think Thesis theme is a good choice for this? I dont know what the technical term is but once i build the site for the owner is it easy for the owner ( not computer savvy at all ) to manage it?

I just like Thesis because it’s an all-around good theme that you can customize. This blog is ran on Thesis. My other niche blogs are as well. Every site I own is on thesis :)

If you’re decent at html, you can really get down and customize EVERYTHING. You can also outsource that work to others to really give you the design you want.

So yes, I recommend Thesis. If you want, show me your site and I’ll help you make it look good with Thesis.
